Just Be a Philosopher Already: On Being a Thomistic Theologian
For me I only have the capacity to follow a Dogmatic or Systematic theology insofar that I believe it is sticking to the theo-logic inherent to the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. This is what keeps it Biblical. This is what keeps it from adulterating and going beyond the đĄđđ„đĄ; that is, by going to its inner and upward reality in the Godman (Theanthropos), Jesus Christ. In other words, speculative theologies, ones that reason from the being of humanity to the being of God; ones that reason discursively about nature vis-Ă -vis God, as if nature holds vestiges of God;…
Godâs Theologian for the World: A Picture
What a true theologian looks like; Godâs theologian for the world. The theologianâs posture doing the will of the Father. Vasily Perov circa 1878 Athanasian Reformed
To Be Or Not To Be a Genuinely Christian Theologian
To be genuinely Christ conditioned is to be a true Christian theologian. To be a speculative theologian, that is a purely metaphysical theologian, is to go beyond the Word of God, which runs contrary to the Protestant âScripture Principle,â and a radical commitment to a Theology of the Word of God. To find a genuine Christian theologian of import in the history of interpretation is not always an easy task. There are many who claim the name of Christâand I am not doubting their salvation in any wayâbut then fill up their respective theologies with straw that has been cultivated…
Irenaeus as a Christ Conditioned Theologian
The following is taken from my final exam from my Patristic Theology class in seminary (circa 2003); we had to answer three out of five questions in essay form. This essay highlights the person and theology of Irenaeus. I will provide a brief description of Irenaeus first, and then get into the essay. This was before I ever started reading either Barth or Torrance in any depth. But you might see how once I did, I was already predisposed to their respective theologies vis-Ă -vis informing theologies like Irenaeusâ represents. Irenaeus (ca. 130-200) was Bishop of Lyons. Most likely he grew…
A Screed on the Relationship Between the Biblical Exegete and Theologian
When people say that theology isnât really biblical studies, they fail to understand what theology is doing. Good theology is engaging with the inner theo-logic of the text of Holy Scripture and its reality in Jesus Christ. Itâs engaging with the underlying notions that allow the Scripture writers to write and assert what they do about God. Itâs identifying the theological ontological ground that sees Scripture in its taxis or order vis a vis as an instrument of the living and triune God. Good theologians are engaging with the Holy, as such, they unswervingly trust that God is a good…
Looking Past the Theologians to Godâs Theologian for the World
As is well established by now, I have struggled with reading Karl Barth because of his unrepentant lifestyle. But the reality, which is also well noted by many, is many of our most cherished Protestant and otherwise theologians from the past were also sinners; even to the point of dying in unrepentance. For me whatâs really at issue is mining the past, from wherever it comes, insofar that that past can help illuminate, imaginate, and faithfully bear witness to King Jesus and the triune God. The scholastics Reformed had a way of doing what they called âreverential exposition.â They would…
