Prompts for Prayers of Intercession – October 9, 2022

These prompts are provided for worship leaders as they prepare the prayers of intercession for weekly worship. The prompts are prepared by several leaders in the ELCA and reflect current world and national events. You are encouraged to adapt and add other concerns for your local context, including staying informed of events and concerns in your synod.

For those recovering in the aftermath of Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, including our siblings in the Florida-Bahamas Synod and the Caribbean Synod…
For the ministries of American Indian and Alaska Native siblings in our church, and for all relationships of reconciliation with indigenous communities…
For the Supreme Court of the United States as it begins a new term…
For the social and political unrest in Iran and for all who strive for gender equality and human rights…
For the work of scientists, including the recent recipients of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, who help us to learn more about our universe and God’s creation…

Suggested hymns & prayers:

A prayer for the Day of Thanksgiving (ELW p. 61)
Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you in willing obedience, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

A prayer for those affected by natural disasters (ACS p. 49)
Save us, O God, for the waters are rising, and there is no firm place to stand. Life as we know it has been swept away. Draw near to us in this time of need and be our protection. Support us as we rebuild what has been ruined. Do not let us drown in our sorrow, but raise us to new life in your promise of rebirth, already claimed for us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Hymn of lament for creation and a changing climate:
Can You Feel the Seasons Turning (ACS 1065)

Hymn from an indigenous culture (Dakota):
Many and Great, O God (ELW 837/WOV 794)
